What we love most about Laval is that a good part of the town reveals itself on foot. From our apartments, you can leave the car behind and set off to wander: a few streets are enough to reach a terraced park, the banks of the Mayenne river, or a lively market square. The town invites you to explore it unhurried, following the rhythm of the seasons.
Here are the places we most often recommend to those who stay with us. Nothing spectacular in the touristy sense of the word, but places that are alive and genuine, where you quickly understand why the people of Laval hold them so dear.
The Jardin de la Perrine, a Breath of Air in the Heart of Town
This is without doubt our favourite, and that of many people in Laval. This terraced park rises in tiers at the heart of the town, offering a stunning view over the town and the Mayenne that flows through it. You'll find benches to read on, to catch your breath, or even to work outdoors when the weather allows, a true pocket of nature and a few animals that delight the little ones. You can spend five minutes here or a whole morning, depending on the mood.
The Banks of the Mayenne and the Towpaths
Strolling along the Mayenne is the simplest and most beautiful walk from our accommodations. On foot or by bike, you follow the water without ever crossing a car, and that changes everything. In the warmer months, open-air riverside cafes set up along the water: the perfect chance to pause, drink in hand, watching the river glide gently by.
The Lakeside on Rue du Bac, for Families
A little further on, the lake on Rue du Bac is perfect for a family outing. It is lined with walking trails where you can stroll at your own pace, and at the end of the path a free-to-use plancha grill and children's playground await you. People happily come here for an impromptu lunch in the open air, while the little ones dash from one game to the next.
Place de la Tremoille, Between Two Lavals
A beautiful pivotal square, the Tremoille links the old Laval with the more modern town. It's a pleasure to wander here, to linger at a terrace, and on market days it takes on the air of a beating heart: stalls, colours and conversations. It's a good starting point to then lose yourself in the old lanes all around.
The Bois de l'Huisserie, to Get Away From It All
When the craving for greenery is stronger, head to the Bois de l'Huisserie, a vast wooded area at the edge of town. People come here for long walks with family or friends, and the more sporty types will find facilities and trails designed just for them. It's the ideal place to breathe deeply and return home in the evening, pleasantly tired.
